Snowflakes

Niwa was so excited last Monday because we had the privilege of making snowflakes with Frances, Arabella and Kelsey. Each person had six squares of paper that we cut and folded and glued to create these 3-D snowflakes. It was fun and they looked amazing! People took their snowflakes home and gave them as sensational presents to their families.

Mathletics Challenge

This week, Room 11 has launched the Mathletics challenge again, because we want to become first in the world. Our goal is to get 250,000 at least for the whole class.

Jack is busy organising a roster for our class so everybody can have a turn and get the class points, as well as scoring their minimum weekly 1,000 points. He was assigned this task, because he had successfully organised our last challenge!

Art - Sculpted Photography:

Room 11 continues with art as being one of its major focii this term. Yesterday afternoon, all students were out and about around the school snapping photos of the beautiful nature that we have in our school grounds. They have printed these out and are now busy producing art works that are inspired by Matt Dodge, the American world champion snowboarder and artist - check out his website:

First success for the term:

Bailey and Sage had success on our first day back at school this term - they both scored 100% in their Five Minute Frenzy Addition grid AND they scored a time UNDER 5 minutes!
Congratulations to Sage and Bailey, our newest 100%'ers!

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to our last term for 2011!

We have been very fortunate that we have been joined by 6 new students from Room 12 - Nicola, Paige, Porsha, Anthony and Sam. We know that they will love all the exciting learning that takes place in Room 11.

Ben 11th
Natalie 65th
Niwa 70th
Jamie 77th

Congratulations Room 11!

Mathletics Update:

Room 11 is 2nd in New Zealand and 32nd in the world in Mathletics!

Room 11's record breakers:

This morning when Room 11 did the Five Minute Frenzy, we tried to beat our record of 17 people scoring 100%, and at first we thought that we had equalled our top score of 17, until Briana came up and said that she also got 100%.
We all cheered, because now our record is 18 people scoring 100%!
Fantastic effort Room 11!

Bailey's first time:

Bailey has finally got a time in the Five Minute Frenzy and he feels awesome, because in all the other Five Minute Frenzies, he has never had a time, and this is his first ever time.
He started from the zeroes and went to the highest number. Sometimes, he practises at home, and now he is going to practise every night at home, so he can get 100% and a time every day.
Congratulations Bailey!

Tuko's 3rd 100%:

Tuko says that he is proud that he got his third 100% ever in the Five Minute Frenzy this morning with a time of 4:15.
He did the easy ones straight away, and then he went to the higher ones that he didn't know. He learnt to work from the low numbers to the high numbers.
We are all very proud of Tuko, too!

Mathletics Update:

Room 11 is currently 3rd in New Zealand in Mathletics!!!

Briana's cool complex sentence:

Every night, in Briana's homework book that she does her maths questions in, she writes one complex sentence to help her with her writing, to make better sentences. When Briana got the class pamphlet for Term 3, it told her what she had to do for homework, so she set out a schedule with her dad, for her to do every night.
Her writing is getting better and her confidence in writing stories or poems is improving. Here is the complex sentence Briana wrote yesterday in class:
Rainbow's End is a fun-filled adventure theme park, with rides that will make your heart pump with excitement.

Room 11's Mathletics goals:

This week Room 11's goal in Mathletics is to get at least 50,000 points and to beat Mrs Kendall's class, R18, the Year 8's! and so far, we are easily beating Room 18!

Jack made a roster for the class for Mathletics so that everybody can get 1,000 points and get a certificate. He is usually the best Mathlete in the class, so he is perfect for leading the class in achieving our goals for Mathletics this week.

Right now, we are coming 8th in New Zealand, but have no placing in the world rankings just yet. Jayden is 2nd in New Zealand, Niwa is 23rd, Ben is 25th, Abbi is 40th, Samsara is 53rd and Natasha is 59th.
Go Room 11!

Waiuku's Beauty by Briana

Lots of rolling hills,

grass so green the whole hill's filled.

Beautiful beach bouncing by.

Hey look! there goes a butterfly.

Sand so sparkly, water so clean,

everyone is happy not mean.

Houses so big, houses so small,

none of them are really tall.

Waiuku Weekend by Jayden and Samsara

Waiuku is awesome and everyone knows
How the town works and just how it goes.
Crash, the waves go at Karioitahi beach
with black sand and dogs ready to teach.
Then we go to Fitzy's and have a chip,
but beware, it will cost you a bit.
Tomorrow wake up and walk to school,
play on the playground and think you rule.
Your weekend has ended, but don't frown,
just wait unitl Friday and you'll be back in town.

Waiuku by Natasha

Waiuku is the place to be
There's lots of cafes for you and me.
Karioitahi, a long black sand beach
the sea looks just like a giant black boy peach.

Go to Fitzy's and buy your chips.
When you eat them and they touch your lips,
You will cry out loud, 'This is delish!'

Wonderful Waiuku by Shontelle

Out on the black sand beach
Castaways is not far from reach.
To Dingle Dell or Fitzy's
Maybe for some fish'n'chips
Beware the dog, he always nips.

Many farms are near
But one thing you have to hear,
the birds and bees
are always pleased,
spring is not far away.

Pigs and cows
sometimes give you frowns
Rolling on the ground
tracking mud around
without a sound.

Waiuku by Charis and Sharon

Waiuku is the place to be
and it is the place for me.
You can go to the beach,
you can go to school and teach.
Or you can go to the cafe
and have a cup of tea.
Sometimes you can hear
engines going Boom!
And sometimes you can hear cars going Zoom!

Waiuku, Waiuku by Abbi and Katiana

Waiuku, Waiuku, you can never get enough,
but if you're here for too long,
it will start getting rough.

Waiuku, Waiuku, go to the Kentish Hotel,
but beware,
because in Waiuku
there's only one motel

Waiuku, Waiuku, it's a noisey place
most of the time
you will hear boom, boom, pow!
But if you visit on Guy Fawkes,
you will drop your jaw
and say 'Wow'!

Karioitahi by Aidan and Jack

A big, long, black sand beach

with waves that roar like a lion,

and waterfalls that go splash!

with beautiful hillside views.

Wonderful Waiuku by Jamie

Wonderful Waiuku

sometimes sunny and sometimes gray,

have a good old kiwi barbecue,

and you don't even have to pay.

Sunny Waiuku,

takes my heart away,

for this is where I belong,

and this is where I'll stay.

Please note that Jamie says that he'll probably move to Auckland City.

Natasha's dance exam:

Last Wednesday, Natasha had to leave school early to go to her jazz dance exam in Pukekohe. She had to go to a hairdresser to get her hair done. This Tuesday, she got her results back and she was awarded with highly commended.
Natasha was disappointed that it wasn't the mark she was hoping for even though she had practised.
Her hair looked gorgeous and stayed in for 3 whole days! and we are looking forward to Natasha dancing for us.

Maddy's cute baby bunny rabbits:

Today Graham brought in four of our baby rabbits. When the baby bunnies were first born, it was amazing to see them grow every day, because in two weeks they had some fur. Everyone loved the baby rabbits and wanted to hold them, because they are so cute and snuggly.
In two weeks, we will have to sell them, because if we don't, we'll have too many rabbits. I don't want to let them go, as I like to go out every afternoon and hold them. My favourite is Ginger, the one with the little ginger spots.

The answer:

Room 11 started studying the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin. He flew Vostok1 once around the Earth in 1961. He had a just better than 50% chance of coming home alive, and he did!
Jamie was lying on a chair on the floor trying to interpret him in his rocket flying into space.

Thursday, September 22, 2011

Why is Jamie sitting on the floor in a chair???

Watch

tomorrow for the answer!

Natalie scores 100% in today's Five Minute Frenzy!

Natalie joins Room 11 for maths every morning. She has been away for 3 weeks at a tangi and to her dad's house, too. She came back on Monday this week and scored 100% for the first time in her Five Minute Frenzy...and this morning too!

Natalie feels really great that she scored 100%, and her goal is to get 100% more often and to improve her time.

Congratulations Natalie! We know that you will achieve your goal!

Wednesday, September 21, 2011

My Fabulous win!

Ben says:
Today was my first time beating Jamie in the Five Minute Frenzies, by 3 seconds!
And I also scored a perfect 100% with it as well.
It's been a goal of mine to beat Jamie in the Five Minute Frenzies for a very long time, and now I've done it!
I feel so good about it because I'm going to beat him again tomorrow!

Clay Athletes:

Niwa says that Room 11 has been making clay athletes as part of our Rugby World Cup studies. We had to get the right shapes for the athletes and the size, for example, for a sumo they have to be big in the arms and the legs. We had to do what they wear and do the right hair, too. It was challenging, because it was quite difficult to get the body the right shape. It was really fun!

Yuri Gagarin blasts into Room 11!

This morning we read an interesting article about Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space. No-one knew about him, and now that Finn has read the story he feels it's real interesting, and doesn't know why he didn't know about it before!

We had to write a dialogue that would have happened between Yuri and Ground Control during take-off, flight and landing - it was real fun!

Tuesday, September 6, 2011

The Biggest Gainers:

Maddy and Nadia are Room 11's biggest gainers in Basic Facts!
Nadia is our biggest gainer for this month.  She improved her August basic facts score of 40%  and this month, she scored a massive 73%! giving her a 33% improvement! Sensational Nadia!
Maddy was on 26% at the start of the year and this month, she scored 93%, making her Room 11's biggest gainer for the whole year!
Marvellous Maddy!

Thursday, September 1, 2011

100%'ers:

Today was the first day that Niwa and Tuko scored 100% in the Five Minute Frenzy (C)!  Niwa feels happy, because it's her first time to score 100%, and she only scored 46% in her first test.  Tuko feels proud that he scored his first 100% as he only scored 27% in his first test. Their goal was to achieve 100% and get a good time under 5 minutes.  The whole class is proud of Tuko and Niwa's success.

We had an astonishing 17 people achieve 100% in this morning's Five Minute Frenzy:
Tuko, Niwa, Jamie, Abbi, Ben, Shontelle, Sian, Jayden, Phoebe, Briana, Ashlee, Finn, Aidan, Sharon, Charis, Katiana and Maddy.  Only 5 people scored 100% - Jamie, Natasha, Abbi, Sharon and Jack - when we first started doing Five Minute Frenzies.  Natasha would probably have scored 100% too, if she hadn't been at music.
Fantastic learning Room 11!

Wednesday, August 31, 2011

Tuko's classic medal:

Tuko feels happy that he won his first bronze medal for Spelling, and he has got his second certificate. He is happy to come to this school to get a bronze medal. Tuko has been trying ever since he came to our school to get a medal and now he has achieved his goal. Terrific Tuko!

Awhitu's 2km run:

At 10.15am Samsara, Jack and Jayden walked down to the hall, ready for the 2km race for cross-country in Awhitu. They hopped in seperate cars and soon arrived at our destination. They had roundabout half an hour to check our route, warm up and have a little something to eat.
Then a lady gave a humungous speech about the route and how there was going to be marshalls so we wouldn't get lost.
The third race was Samsara and Jayden in the Year 6 girls. Jayden came 9th and Samsara came 17th, that means Jayden is a reserve for Zone Day. The fourth race was Jack's, the Year 6 boys. Jack came 15th, and he felt really good because it was the first time he had been to Group Day.
They felt very proud of themselves, because they got very good placings, because they raced against 5o other children of their age.

Phoebe's Ballerina:

Katiana's Gymnast on the Beam:

Kian's Gymnast on the Rings:

Finn's Sumo Wrestler:

Awesome A/V Monitor:

Bailey is Room 11's A/V monitor this term. He takes photographs and record videos of our class doing plays, and downloading these onto the server. He feels really, really good about being A/V monitor. Ben says it helps us alot, having Bailey as A/V monitor, as now we can just ask Bailey to record our work and save it for us.

Bailey's cool spelling sentences:

Bailey used three words out of his spelling notebook and then put them into complex sentences for homework. He wrote them by himself and then his mum marked them. Bailey feels really good because he doesn't usually write sentences as good as these ones.
Here they are:
My mum took a photograph of me with a camera.
My mum told me to focus because I wasn't focusing on my work.
I practised my spelling at home last night.

Maddy's Fabulous Netball Year:

Last Sunday at the Waiuku Primary Netball prizegiving, when our team was up on stage, there were two people who were being presented with trophies and Maddy was one of them. She was happy, because she was given the trophy for the most improved player and she also got the certificate to go with it. When Maddy first started playing netball, she was stepping all the time and when it was the last game, she didn't step once!
Mrs South, Maddy's coach, was very proud of her!

100%ers in Five Minute Frenzy Multiplication:

This week's timestable frenzy was easier because there was 1X tables and sometimes 2X tables. Room 11 is getting better because they are getting used to the format and layout. Ben, Jamie, Abbi and Sharon are practising them at home.
Eight people scored 100% correct this morning within 5 minutes:

Natasha

Jamie

Nadia

Jack

Sharon

Abbi

Jayden

Congratulations!

Хорошая работа Джейми!

Good work Jamie!
Jamie has been learning his Russian alphabet at home. He knows how to pronounce and write the Russian alphabet off by heart. He is learning by printing the alphabet off at home and he has been writing it down and saying it lots of times. Jamie also made this clip on Garageband to demonstrate his new skills!
Jamie says learning Russian is awsome as!

Россия алфавита Джейми

Ben's cross-country goals!

Ben was aiming for a perfect Top 10 in the Waiuku Primary School's cross-country this week, and a perfect time - 10:50. He pretended that he was a racing car driver and it worked!
On the first day's training, he got a time of 15:00 exactly, and came in one of the last people to finish. On Wednesday, Ben came 4th in his age group and 10th altogether, and he has made it as a reserve to Group Day cross-country. It's impressive that he beat his time by 5 minutes!

Go Ben!

Thursday, August 25, 2011

Super Speller:

Sian has been working very hard on her spelling, with a fantastic result yesterday with 100% correct on her usual spelling that she does every week with her buddy.
Sian feels very pleased that she has finally got 100% and so does Ms Clydesdale!

Tuesday, August 23, 2011

Netball mania:

Last Saturday, Maddy and Nadia played in the netball finals at the Waiuku Netball Courts. There were heaps of people there, but not many teams, because it was the finals.
They played only one game and did their hardest to beat Pukeoware. They were so happy because they came second!!!

Monday, August 22, 2011

The Winners:

Yesterday Sage and Jayden went to Forest Hill and played in a Girls soccer tournament. It had 8 rounds. The first three rounds were the deciding rounds to see if you got into the cup or the plateround - our team got into the plate round.
We played 8 games altogether and won 6 games and drew 2. In the semi-finals, we had a penalty shootout, because we had played over time, and still nobody had scored a goal. We won the shootout, and went into the finals, where Jayden scored the winning goal!
Fantastic effort, Jayden and Sage!

Katiana's Title Page:

Room 11 has been learning about Rugby and Russia. This is Katiana's title page that she did for the topic. She used colour, a border with the Russian alphabet and a bright title. She wanted the page to stand out and she added a person holding a Russian flag.

Ms Clydesdale showed the class as an exemplar, so they have an idea of what they could do.

This is one of Katiana's favourite title pages, because it's bright and colourful, and successful!

Master Mathlete:

Jack has tried so hard on Mahtletics and has always accomplished his goal to be the top of the class. Every week he gets the chocolate fish at assembly for getting the most points in Mathletics in our class.
He is our reigning Mathletics Champion! We are very proud of him!

Magic Mathletes!

This morning, Sian and Samsara started on the shapes and money on Mathletics. They went from zero points to the 3,000's earning Sian 22nd in the WORLD! and 15th in New Zealand. Samsara was 16th in New Zealand and 23rd in the WORLD!
They feel like magnificent Mathletes!

привет!

добро пожаловать Welcome to our blog.
Room 11 is studying Russia, as it is the second country that Waiuku is supporting as part of the Rugby World Cup. We are learning to sing the Russian alphabet and to say some simple greetings.

Monday, August 15, 2011

Ashlee manages herself!

Ashlee was presented with a certificate at assembly last Friday for managing herself at home and at school.
Her behaviour used to be a bully and scary, and now she is happy and kind and helpful.
Her mother is really, really proud of Ashlee and her change in behaviour and her attitude - so is Ms Clydesdale!
Well done, Ashlee!

Homework Rulz!

Room 11 are super students!

Most of the students in Room 11 have been working on our maths, spelling and reading at home every night, because you know what they say...practise makes perfect!

And that's what we are aiming for!

Ms Clydesdale doesn't make us do homework, we don't have to do it, but we want to get better. Samsara has moved up from 56% to 96% in her basic facts!

Maddy has moved up from Level 25 to Level 35 in her spelling.

Sage does her timestables every night.

Katiana does her basic facts and five minute frenzies every night, and she has improved on her basic facts from 39% to 59%.

Sian does her basic facts and spelling every night. Her basic facts facts have gone from 50% to 70%, and she is becoming very successful in learning her spelling words.

Ben does his timestables every night, and his spelling on Tuesdays and Thursdays. He has improved 23% in spelling and in multiplication he has improved 43%, and in basic facts, he has improved 12%. He is focussing on his speed in his multiplication timestables.

Ms Clydesdale is blown away with all this homework happening at home every night, and especially on the massive improvements that the class is making!

Go Room 11!
